Abstract

1396511 Direct lift power plant HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 7 Sept 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 41754/71 Heading B7G Power plant for a V/STOL or VTOL aircraft includes a jet lift unit 4 the efflux from which is directed equally to four generally downwardly directed nozzles arranged as a front pair and a rear pair, through branched ducting 5, 6 each nozzle being equipped with means selectively to deflect the efflux in a lateral plane. Each nozzle is provided with pivoted louvres 9 which are operated in two groups to provide port and starboard nozzles 11, 12. For steady verticaly flight the port and starboard louvres are turned equally but in opposite directions, Fig. 2a (not shown), while for pitch control the louvres of the rear pair are turned equally but oppositely and those of the front pair are turned equally but oppositely but to a different extent to those of the rear pair, Fig. 2c; for roll control, Fig. 2b (not shown), the port louvres are turned equally in the same direction and so are the starboard louvres but to a different extent, while for yaw control, Fig. 2d (not shown), the front port and rear starboard louvres are turned equally in the same direction, while the other louvres are turned to the same extent in the opposite direction. In each case the movements of the louvres are such that the total vertical lift component of thrust remains constant.
