Abstract

1396419 Hot-dip coating ferrous articles with zinc; nitriding ferrous surfaces GKN (SOUTH WALES) Ltd 2 July 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 38366/72 Headings C7F and C7U In the hot-dip zinc coating of elongated ferrous articles, e.g. wire or strip of rimmed steel, the article is heated in a reducing atmosphere in which nitrogen is formed under such conditions that it reacts with the article surface to form a nitride, and is immediately thereafter passed to the galvanizing bath. The reducing atmosphere may comprise a mixture of dissociated ammonia and ammonia fed to a tubular furnace, the latter dissociating in the furnace to form nascent nitrogen which reacts with the article. A third and optional component of the atmosphere is a gas comprising mainly N 2 with small proportions of H 2 and Co. The galvanized article may pass through a heap of charcoal floating on the molten zinc at the exit point and thereafter be chilled by a water spray.
