Abstract

1392780 Knitting machines C MARTINELLI 10 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 57174/73 Heading D1C A device for tensioning the side edges of knitted fabric 2 in a flat knitting machine comprises a pair of tensioning weights 4 provided with suspension hooks 8 for engaging the respective edges of the fabric and formed with vertically extending spaces 12 through which passes a repositioning rod 13, the rod 13 being periodically raised to engage carriages 10 attached to the weights 4 and thereby detach the weights from the descending fabric and lift them to a new position of suspension nearer the needle beds, the rod being subsequently lowered to a rest position spaced below the carriages so as to allow the tensioning weights to descend once more with the fabric. The rod 13 is raised and lowered by means of an electric motor 15 and crank drive 17, 18 through a rocking lever 20 and supporting arms 14. A guide bar 23 engaged by rollers 22 on arms 14 causes the rod 13 when raised and lowered to move towards and away from the fabric 2, a run-up surface 30 on one of the needle beds 1 serving to pivot the hooks 8 about the rod 13 towards the fabric. When the knitting machine incorporates a narrowing/widening device employing at each side edge of the needle beds a carriage which is displaceable longitudinally of the beds, the carriages. The carriages 10 are biassed outwardly of the rod 13 by ropes 24, springs or counterweights into engagement with guide stops 27 slidably mounted on a guide rod 25, and connected by ropes 28 to the corresponding carriages of the narrowing/widening device. The electric motor 15 may be switched on automatically after a predetermined number of strokes of the knitting carriage and switched off, after a single rotation, by a switch 29.
