Abstract
1391765 Abrading tool KURARAY CO Ltd 21 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24175/73 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions C4 and D1] A non-woven lapping pad having an apparent specific gravity higher than 0À4 and a Shore A hardness of higher than 60 degrees and in which the pores in the mat of three-dimensionally entagled fibres contain polyurethane elastomer and air cells is formed by hot compressing by 10 to 90% a sheet having an apparent specific gravity below 0À4 and a Shore A hardness below 60 degrees. The fibres may be dry or wet laid. In one embodiment they are of nylon. In another embodiment more than 2 synthetic polymers are mixed spun into filaments that are chopped and formed into a web, the web impregnated with polyurethane which is then coagulated by treatment with a mixture of solvent and non-solvent to produce pores. One of the fibre components is then removed by solvent treatment. Preferably the lapping pad is impregnated with by 10 to 90% by wt. of chromium oxide cerium dioxide or alumina granular abrasives. The pad may be shaped in the form of a hemisphere having channels to facilitate the flow of an aqueous suspension of an abrasive such as cerium dioxide during grinding or polishing. High speed mechanical polishing of optical parts, semi-conductor parts, stainless steel, chrome-nickel plating, aluminium, copper and brass and the burnishing of razors is thereby facilitated.
