Abstract
1391230 Coating timepiece dials by evaporation or sputtering SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 22 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 59408/72 Heading C7F [Also in Division G3] A timepiece dial comprises a base, e.g. of metal, with its upper surface at least partly covered by a transparent film to produce interference between light rays reflected from the surface of the base and that of the film, so that the apparent colour of the dial changes according to the angle at which it is viewed. The film is preferably of sapphire but may be of silicon oxide, magnesium fluoride, or zinc sulphide and is formed by evaporation or sputtering. To produce a film of a thickness which varies across the dial, the latter may be arranged at an angle to a sapphire member spaced 20 cm. therefrom in an evacuated vessel. A tensioned quartz plate is also placed in the vessel to permit checking of the wavelength of the interfering rays as evaporation proceeds. The product of the refractive index of the film and its average thickness is less than 2000 Š. The base may be of chromium and coloured silver, gold, or black under the film. The dial surface may be patterned by groove(s) arranged radially or in a lattice or spiral.
