Abstract
1390353 Arc-discharge arrangement TETRONICS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 7 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971 (2) 18 Aug 1971] 44280/74 44281/74 and 44282/74 Divided out of 1390351 Heading H5H [Also in Division C7] An apparatus for establishing an expanded arc column comprises an electrode 1 movable in an orbital path and coacting with a stationary electrode 12, means for establishing an electric discharge between said movable electrode and said stationary electrode, and means for so controlling the rate of orbital movement and the electric discharge conditions that a stable expanded electric discharge is maintained within the zone between the stationary electrode and the path of the movable electrode. The electrode may be consumable, non-consumable, or a plasma gun, for example the arc-constricting type and may be arranged so that its axis generates a cone as in Fig. 1 or a cylinder. An alternating electromagnetic field may be used to augment the arc column or effluent. The stationary electrode may comprise a plurality of segment and means for moving the electrode 1 towards the stationary electrode for starting &c. may be provided and the operating procedure and conditions are described. A method of melting metals, e.g. copper cathodes, by feeding them into an expanded arc column is claimed and described. There are also described furnace arrangement for use with the discharge and processess using the discharges which are claimed in the parent Specification 1,390,351 and the other Specification 1,390,352.
