Abstract

1390166 Desks B SELDEN 26 April 1973 [12 May 1972] 19838/73 Heading A4H A collapsible lapboard structure comprises a base member 28 adapted to rest upon a seat and extend beneath a person, a spacer member 20 hinged at 26 to the base member 28, and a support member 10 hinged at 16 to the spacer member 20, the base and support members 28, 10 being pivotable from a collapsed position see Fig. 1 (not shown) adjacent one face of the spacer member 20 in opposite directions through about 270 degrees to an erected position, Fig.4, extending generally perpendicularly to the spacer member from the opposite face, said hinges and members co-operating to prevent pivoting of the base and support members beyond 270 degrees. In the form shown, edge 30 of spacer member 20 is adjacent the hinge barrel and edge 32 of support member 28 is spaced from the barrel by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of member 20 so that in the erected position edge 30 abuts the hinge leaf attached to member 28 and edge 32 abuts the member 20. One leaf of the hinge 16 is secured to spacer member 20 through a spacing block 22 which defines with member 20 a right angle inset 24 and which has its edge 34 adjacent the barrel, and the other leaf is secured to member 10 so that its edge (35) is spaced from the barrel by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of block 22. In the erected position, the edge 34 abuts the leaf attached to member 10 and edge (35) lies in inset 24 and abuts block 22. Member 10 comprises a sloping board with a spring clip 12. In another form Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown), the support member (36) is L-shaped so that in the collapsed position Fig. 6 the base member (58) rests within and is coplanar with the support member (36). Support member (36) has clamps (42) for mounting a member (60) such a needle point frame. The support member may have a bottom ledge to serve as a book rack. The spacer member may comprise adjustable sections to alter the height and/or slope of the support member. The structure may comprise plastics.
