Abstract
1387991 Shelping ribes POST OFFICE 19 April 1972 [22 Jan 1971] 2951/71 Heading B3E [Also in Division H1] Armouring for an electric cable comprises an elongate strip of expanded metal mesh, e.g. steel mesh. One side of the mesh strip is formed with outwardly extending tongues which engage in the apertures of the mesh on the other side of the strip when the strip is folded about a cable. The tongues are then bent backwards and flattened on to the mesh to form a seam extending along the length of the cable. In a second embodiment the mesh strip is formed with margins that are not apertured. When the strip is folded around a cable the margins of the strip are bent at right angles to the mesh immediately adjoining them and are brought face to face. The margins together are then bent through 180 degrees and then through a further 90 degrees, e.g. using mechanical rollers. Mesh strip may be fed from a drum to folding rollers that bend the strip into a "U"-shaped crosssection. The strip is then wrapped on to the cable by wrapping rollers and a further set of rollers complete the wrapping such that tongues on one side engage apertures on the other side of the mesh, the tongues being subsequently bent back by a hardened steel "plough" and flattened by a final pair of rollers.
