Abstract

1386944 Document reader BURROUGHS CORP 29 Jan 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 4355/73 Heading G4M A magnetic reader/writer for magnetic strips on a bank pass book has a pair of gripper arms 30, 42 operable by a solenoid to grip the leading edge of a pass book and move the edge to abut a stop 26 and a head movable along a magnetic strip on the book and resiliently pressed against the book. The book is inserted through a slot in the reader and passes between the free ends of the gripper arms. A solenoid 106 operates one end of a spring 114 to lift an end 32 of the upper arm and so close the free ends. When the book is gripped an inclined slot 36 in the upper arm moves along pivoting bar 34 to move the book towards stop 26. When entered the book operates switches 122 via buttons 120 to indicate the presence of the book and, if the switches do not operate concurrently to indicate misalignment. The switches may be wired in series to operate solenoid 106. The head is carried on a block 60 movable on guides 64 and is adjustable (Fig. 11, not shown) to alter its angle relative to its direction of movement. The block is moved by a card 132 clamped at 130 and coupled at one end to a return spring (Fig. 4, not shown) and at the other end to a cam operated pivotally mounted arm so that movement of the arm moves the block. The head 20 is mounted on resilient arms 7, 8 and is contacted by a further resilient arm 104. A camming pin 72 is mounted between arm 104 and a camming surface (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) to press the head against the strip after the block has commenced movement. The arm 104 compensates for different thickness of book.
