Abstract

1386289 Washing microspheres REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND (STICHTING) 25 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 39821/72 Heading C1A Microspheres of inorganic oxide gels or hydroxides (optionally containing carbon), prepared by forming droplets of a liquid inorganic phase in a water-immiscible organic phase, are washed with an aqueous phase containing a surface active agent, optionally containing NH 3 . The organic phase may also contain a surfaceactive agent, e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitol fatty acid ester, and in this case the agent in the washing phase is preferably a mixture of sorbitan ester of a fatty resin acid with an alkyl aryl sulphonate. The agent may also be present in the inorganic phase when the phase contains particulate carbon. The organic liquid may be a C 12 alkyl benzene. The inorganic phase may contain NH 3 or an ammonia releasing agent, e.g. urea, hexamethylene tetramine, NH 4 CO 3 , potassium cyanate, ammonium cyanate, acetamide and/or formamide. The inorganic phase may be SiO 2 sol, a metal hydroxide sol, a solution of a metal salt and/or an anion deficient solution of a metal salt, e.g. a uranyl nitrate solution. The inorganic phase may contain the metal cations Zr<SP>4+</SP>, Hf<SP>4+</SP>, Y<SP>3+</SP>, Sc<SP>3+</SP> and/or R.E.<SP>3+</SP> together with an actinide metal ion. The washed spheres may then be dried and sintered.
