Abstract

1385251 Cutting tools METAL CUTTING TOOLS Inc 14 June 1972 [30 Sept 1971 25 Feb 1972] 27856/72 Heading B3B A cutting tool comprises an indexable, invertable cutting insert, an insert holder and means for clamping the insert to the holder, the insert 14 having a central hole 21 and the holder 11 having an insert receiving recess 13 therein and the means for clamping the insert in the recess is in the form of a pin 20 having a head portion and a screwed shank portion 27. which engages in a thread bore 24 in the base 15 of the recess and which is inclined at an acute angle to the base 15. The insert is clamped in the recess by the head of the pin engaging in the hole 21 and by rotation of the pin along its inclined axis the head engages the hole 21 to urge the insert into.the base 18 of the recess 9 into abutment with side walls 16 of the recess which correspond to two adjacent sides of the insert. The head portion of the pin is so formed as to engage in the hole 21 at upper and lower regions on diametrically opposite sides of the hole respectively. The head may have conical or curved surfaces portions or combination of both to effect paint or line contact in the hole 21. The insert may be supported on a removable seating 17 located between the insert and the base of the recess and may also be provided with resilient retaining washer 45 to locate the seating and maintain its retention in the recess during indexing or inverting the insert. The clamping arrangement described may be applied to turning and boring tools and to milling cutters.
