Abstract

1382257 Audible signalling apparatus WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 30 Dec 1971 [13 Jan 1971] 60700/71 Heading G4F [Also in Division H4] For use in a voice communication system transmitting an audio signal through the earth, e.g. between the surface and trapped miners and vice versa, a receiver comprises a loop antenna, an audio amplifier, and an output transducer producing an audible signal; the loop antenna has an output voltage increasing linearly with frequency up to a self-resonant frequency which is above the band of frequencies being transmitted. The transmitter may include an audio frequency power amplifier with a preamplifier and a microphone, and one or more antennas, with a multiple-tapped transformer forming a coupling and matching network between the amplifier and the antenna(s). The antenna may be a long wire earthed at its ends or a large loop. A receiver may be mounted on each miner's helmet, the loop antenna comprising a number of turns of wire about a ferrite core. The system may also be used for transmitting messages to vehicle drivers using a buried long wire antenna and loop antennas on the vehicles.
