Abstract

1381591 Cleaning scrap EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 25 Jan 1972 [26 Jan 1971] 3139/71 Heading C7E Metal scrap, minerals, or ores (materials) associated with a contaminating liquid comprising water, oil, or oil/water emulsion are treated with a cleaning liquid which is water containing an emulsifier, liquefied petroleum gas, a C 5 , C 6 , or C 7 hydrocarbon or mixture thereof or light virgin naphtha (defined in the Specification), and the materials are separated from the mixture of contaminant and cleaning liquid and passed to a furnace. For instance, the material may be metal scrap or iron ore, and the contaminant a cutting oil emulsion; the removed cutting oil/cleaning liquid mixture may be treated to recover cutting oil by gravity separation and/or distillation; where the cleaning liquid is a hydrocarbon it may be re-used or burnt.
