Abstract

1381071 Making tobacco-smoke filters BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 6 April 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 16659/73 Heading A2C A continuous composite rod, divisible into individual cigarette mouthpieces of the kind having a particulate component sandwiched between two other components 12a, 12b, is made by enclosing the components 12a, 12b in a continuous wrapper 10 onto which they are fed endwise in line in spaced relation to define spaces 14, feeding particulate material into the spaces 14 through openings 18 in the wrapper 10 and then sealing the openings 18. Sealing may be effected by application of a relatively narrow tape 22a (Fig. 2), or by completely overwrapping the rod within an outer wrapper 22 (Fig. 1). The openings 18 may be formed by using a wrapper 10 provided with preformed opposing notches 16a, 16b as shown, with notches along one edge only or with centrally disposed perforations, or the wrapper 10 may be perforated after it has been closed around the components 12a, 12b. The rodforming operation may be effected intermittently, the rod travel being stopped at regular intervals to enable a plurality of spaces to be simultaneously filled by a corresponding number of metering jets.
