Abstract
1380025 Anti-reflection coatings CARL ZEISS-STIFTUNG [trading as CARL ZEISS] 22 Feb 1973 [4 March 1972] 8722/73 Heading G2J A method of providing an anti-reflection coating on a plastics optical element, e.g. a spectacle lens, without treatment of the surface of the element comprises applying a thin first layer of silicon oxide, then applying a second layer comprising a mixture of silicon oxide and a material of higher refractive index, e.g. an oxide of cerium, tantulum, titanium or zirconium, such that the proportion of silicon oxide in the mixture is progressively reduced during the building up of the second layer until the refractive index at the surface of this layer is higher than that of the material of the optical element, and finally applying a further layer of silicon oxide. The second layer is applied by evaporation such that initially only silicon oxide is evaporated whereafter the rate of evaporation of silicon oxide is reduced while the rate of evaporation of the higher refractive index material is progressively increased. The outer silicon oxide layer has a #/4 thickness. The refractive index on the surface of the second layer may be substantially equal to the square of that of the outer silicon oxide layer.
