1379980 Coking coal ESCHWEILER BERGWERKS-VEREIN 2 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 25801/72 Heading C5E A process for rendering coking coal having a swelling index less than 5 suitable for hotbriquetting comprises heating the coal, which should have a grain size up to 14,000 Á, to 400‹ C. in a stream of hot gas with simultaneous horizontal movement of the coal by the gas, at a heating rate of about 1000‹ C. per second. In an illustrated embodiment, a portion of the coal is burnt to provide the hot gas which is passed through a horizontal pipe to which predetermined quantities of the rest of the coal are delivered at spaced points. Water coolers precede and/or succeed a cyclone separator downstream of the pipe.
