Abstract
1379130 Colouring polyester resins DAWNPRESS Ltd 20 March 1973 [15 April 1972] 17503/72 Heading C3P A synthetic polyester resin is coloured by forming a batch of translucent, unsaturated polyester resin, adding a thixotropic additive to the batch and mixing until the resin becomes a viscous mass, dividing the batch into a primary batch and at least one or more secondary batch(es), adding colouring matter to the or each secondary batch, adding a catalyst to the primary and secondary batches and mixing each batch independently, adding the coloured secondary batch or batches to the mass of the primary batch and mixing and pouring the whole into a mould and allowing the resin to set. When the resin has set as a first layer, a second layer of unsaturated polyester resin which is coloured throughout may be applied to provide a background colour. A suitable thixotropic additive is fumed silica. Suitable colouring agents are a pearl dye, e.g. fish scales and metallic jewels, i.e. flakes of aluminium foil coated with epoxy resin.
