Abstract
1378622 Storage battery with water-filling device JAPAN STORAGE BATTERY CO Ltd 5 Jan 1973 845/73 Heading H1B A battery case 5 formed with cells 8 by partitions 5<SP>1</SP> has a water-filling device 61, for each cell, mounted above the cover 6. These devices 61 are enclosed to form water-supplement chambers 46 separated by walls 44 having interconnecting apertures 7. The device 61 at one end of the battery has a port 4 for connection to a water supply and the device at the other end has a port (not shown) for connection either to the atmosphere or to the port 4 of another battery. Each device 61 has a vertical tube 1 normally functioning as a vent, the lower end of the -tube defining the normal level of the electrolyte. The upper end of each tube 1 is encircled by a depending annular wall 43 forming an air-lock chamber 3 preventing water entering the tube 1 from the device 61. A port 2 in the floor of each device enables water to enter the cell and may also function as an air exhaust port. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a number of batteries are coupled by pipes in series in the water-filling system and the exhaust from the final battery is terminated in an explosion-preventing device. The pipe leading to the explosion-preventing device may be transparent so that the water in it may indicate the electrolyte level in the batteries. Since the ports 2, 4, 7 are at substantially the same level, the individual cells of a battery are filled simultaneously.
