Abstract

1378145 Filter cigarettes &c BRITISHAMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 21 Sept 1972 [11 Oct 1971] 47237/71 -Heading A2C A cigarette or other smoking article or component therefor comprises an outer wrapping 9 of perforated or air-porous material inside which a band 8 of heat-shrink film material is so disposed as to close the perforations 17a or porous material against the passage of air, but so that shrinkage of the band 8 caused by the heat of the hot smoke of the approaching coal will uncover the perforations 17a (as shown in Fig. 2) or porous material to admit outside air into the article. In the embodiment shown, the band 8 encloses a filter plug 6 which is deformed at one end as the band shrinks, but the band 8 may alternatively be disposed around the mouth end of the tobacco filler 1 adjacent the filter plug 6. In other embodiments, the filter plug 6 is spaced from the filler 1, the band 8 with overlying perforations 17a being disposed between the two, and the space houses either a further conventional filter plug (21) tightly wrapped by the band 8 or an air and smoke impervious body (13) of smaller diameter than the internal diameter of the band 8 in its unshrinked state.
