Abstract

1377949 Refuse furnaces REDMAN HEENAN FROULDE Ltd T SALTER and D R J KNOTT 15 Nov 1971 46785/70 Heading F4B A refuse furnace 1 has a first combustion chamber 2, having at least one inlet 4 for refuse and at least one tangential primary air inlet 8, connected to a second combustion chamber 3 via a narrow passageway formed by an annular rib 5, the arrangement being such that cyclonic combustion flow is induced in the chambers and combustion commences in the first chamber and is completed in the second. Large items of refuse are introduced through a door 4 and further refuse is blown into the first combustion chamber via a tangential inlet 9. Molten slag leaves the first chamber via a channel 12 and ash via a tangential outlet (11), Fig. 3 (not shown). Waste oil, &c. may be introduced into the second chamber. The annular ribs 5, 6 are heated to incandescence during operation of the furnace and thus assist combustion of the refuse. The exit end 7 of the second combustion chamber may lead to a waste heat boiler, filter or chimney. The furnace has an outer shell of pre-cast concrete or metal and a refractory lining.
