Abstract

1377673 Stoppers, &c. SURGICAL EQUIPMENT SUPPLIES Ltd 27 Dec 1972 [5 July, 1972] 31539/72 Heading B8T A stopper 1 of rubber or like composition suitable for use in in-bottle heat sterilization has a sealing surface 2 for engaging the inside neck of a bottle. A groove 4 ending in a cavity 5 forms a snap closure with the bottle neck. Below the surface 2 a lip tapers to an edge 9 which in the unstressed state is of greater diameter than the sealing surface 2. Opposite the bore 8 is a depression 10 to indicate the thinnest part of the stopper for insertion of a cannula for withdrawal of liquid. When pressure in the bottle builds up (as a result of raising the temperature) the lip tends to roll about the edge 9 thus making a sealing contact that improves the efficiency of the stopper. When pressure within the bottle is normalized the stopper can be removed by thumb action. The surface 2 may be shorter than surface 3 Fig. 3 (not shown). The stopper may be a screw cap instead of a snap cap. It is possible to pilfer proof a stoppered bottle by means of a heat shrinkable PVC bond.
