Abstract

1377644 Changing web rolls MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 4 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 4045/71 Heading B8R In a method of, and apparatus for changing a web roll in a winding operation, the web W is led between a fresh reel core 2, a rider roller 1 and a guide roller 14 positioned close to the core so that the web envelopes the greater part of the core circumference, the web then being cut between the core and guide roller from the side that was outermost when traversing the core, the web being supported immediately upstream and the cut leading-end being folded back upon itself as it is directed into the nip between the core and rider roller. The method and apparatus may be combined with the method and apparatus described and claimed in Specification 1,377,643. The rider roller and guide roller are mounted on pivotable arms 3, 7 adjustable for different core sizes and movable towards and away from the fresh reel core by pneumatic motors (5), (9), Fig. 1 (not shown). A toothed knife 98, fold blade 19 and transfer brush 20, pivotable into operative position by a pneumatic motor 16, are adjustably mounted on the guide roller arm 7 by a plate 10 whereas a backup bar 24, also pivotable into operative position, by a pneumatic motor (23), is mounted on the rider roller arm 3. When it is desired to change a web roll, the arms 3, 7 are moved towards the fresh reel core which is accelerated to web speed, the back-up bar is moved into operative position and motor 16 is then activated causing knife 18 to sever the web against the back-up bar, the cut leading end then being folded by blade 19 and pushed into the nip between the rider roller and fresh core by the brush 20.
