Abstract
1377484 Blasting J C HEMPELS SKIBSFARVE-FABRIKAS 9 Dec 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 59328/70 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions C7 and C4] A metal surface is blasted by particles capable of abrading said surface, to which particles a corrosion-protecting metal is bound by a binder, to simultaneously clean the surface and provide a protective coating thereon. The substrate metal may be iron or steel, and "blasting" includes conventional blasting, abrasion by particles flung by rotating wheels, and abrasion by particles carried in a fluid. The abrasive may be cut wire, cast iron or steel shot or grit, synthetic or natural oxides, e.g. Al 2 O 3 or ZrO 2 , silicas such as sand, glass shot or grit, flint, or conglomerates or slags; the corrosion-protecting metal may be Zn, Al, Cd, Mg, Pb, Sn, Mn, Sn/Zn, Cu/Zn or Wood's alloy (50 Bi, 25 Pb, 12À5 Cd, 12À5 Sn), and the binder may be up to 1 wt. per cent plastics, varnishes, oils, sodium silicate, ethyl silicate, tar, asphalt or wax; a paintability improver may be added to the particle, e.g. ZnO may be added to Zn. A composition usable in the above process comprises particles capable of abrading a metal substrate with zinc metal bound thereto by a binder, and is made by (i) applying to an abrasive a dispersion of finely divided zinc in a binder; (ii) applying the binder first and the zinc later or (iii) by applying several layers by the above methods; where one layer contains a paintability improver, the top layer should be zinc. In the blasting process, the abrasive may or may not be recycled; some non-metallized abrasive may be used simultaneously.
