Abstract

1377320 Sulphurized calcium alkyl phenolates TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 July 1973 31829/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A sulphurized normal calcium alkylphenolate having a calcium metal to alkylphenol ratio of about 1, a Ca content of about 1 to 8 wt. per cent and a S content of about 0À5 to 12 wt. per cent is obtained by (a) contacting an alkylphenol of the formula wherein R is one or two (C 5 to C 50 ) alkyl radicals, with a first addition of a calcium alkoxyalkoxide of the formula wherein A is C 1 to C 6 alkylene and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 to C 25 alkyl, at a first temperature of 200‹ to 425‹ F., using a mole ratio of calcium alkoxyalkoxide to said alkylphenol of 0À225 : 1 to 0À45 : 1; (b) contacting the resulting mixture with S in the presence of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil at a second temperature of 350‹ to 425‹ F., at a mole ratio of S to initial alkylphenol of 0À5 : 1 to 8 :1, while blowing the reaction mixture with 0À1 to 10 SCFH/gallon of an inert gas, continuing said blowing until the H 2 S content of said reaction mixture is less than 3 p.p.m.; and (c) contacting the blown mixture with a second addition of calcium alkoxyalkoxide, at said second temperature, in a mole ratio of calcium alkoxyalkoxide to initial alkylphenol of about 0À15 : 1 to 0À375 : 1 in such an amount that the total calcium alkoxyalkoxide employed in steps (a) and (c) provides a total mole ratio of calcium alkoxyalkoxide to initial alkylphenol of 0À5 : 1 to 0À6 : 1. Examples are given which illustrate the process of the invention.
