1375686 Sewing machines; pleating GELLMAN INDUSTRIES Inc 1 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 20659/73 Headings DIG and D1S A pleating attachment, for a sewing machine in which a workpiece 80 is held by a clamp 6 (Fig. 11) on a movable feed table 5 for sewing an L-shaped superposed double seam 8, comprises a fixed blade 13 between two pivoted blades 14, 15, mounted on an arm 12 of a head 11 which is pivotable (on ball joints 55, 56 (Fig. 6)), about an axis parallel to the fixed blade 13 on, and is reciprocable with, a slidable plate 31. The attachment also includes a ram 34 for sliding the plate 31, a ram 23 for moving a pleating channel 20 at an angle to the vertical (Fig. 6), a knob 70 for adjusting a pair of cams 71, 72, which are engaged respectively by a pin 75 on the pleater channel for controlling the pleat depth and a pin 76 on the head 11 for controlling the amplitude of tilting of the head, and a screw 46 for adjusting the pleat spacing. The plate 31 is slidable on a swing plate 2 which is urged by a spring 28 against a stop 29 which is adjusted to dispose the fixed blade 13 parallel to the long portion of the seam 8. In use the pleat spacing and depth are adjusted by the screw 46 and the knob 70 as shown on scales 51 and 69 and a workpiece 80 is placed on the feed table 5 against the stops 9 and 10 and a clamping pedal operated. The feed plate 5 turns anticlockwise and sewing of the seam 8 is begun, the channel 20 moving down and engaging the workpiece as the long portion parallel to the channel 20, of the seam 8 is completed with the head 11 tilted. The feed plate is then moved forward to stitch the short portion of the seam 8 while the ram 34 extends to form slack in the fabric. The feed plate then returns to its starting position sewing the second superposed seam while the operator pinches the blades 14, 15 together and slides the next pleat to be sewn lengthwise of the pleater.
