Abstract
1375520 Delivering measured quantities of liquid G SCHUSTER 31 Aug 1973 41110/73 Heading B8N A device for ladling molten metal from a crucible 3 to a shoot 4 of a pressure die casting machine comprises a ladle 25 freely rotatable about a horizontal axis 24 and movable vertically, a feeler 32 raisable and lowerable together with the ladle for determining the depth of immersion in the liquid 27, and a shoot 4, the ladle being so constructed that when empty, when taking up liquid or when immersed a torque acts about its axis to hold the ladle against a stop 26 and that in the course of the lifting movement a stop 33 disposed above the shoot can rotate the ladle into its emptying position. The ladle 25 is freely mounted on a bracket 23 secured to the lower part 13 of a bar 10 which is counterbalanced by a weight 21 and driven vertically through a motor 17 and a pinion 16 meshing with teeth 15. The stop 26 can be adjusted to vary the height of the pouring spout of the ladle above that of the inlet as the ladle is rotated clockwise against the stop by the disposition of a greater proportion of mass of the ladle adjacent the inlet. After dipping the bar 10 is raised and the stop 33 on the frame 8 tips the ladle anticlockwise to pour its contents down the shoot 4 to the inlet 6 of a pressure chamber 7 of the die casting machine. A baffle 30 in the ladle prevents delivery of floating impurities. A further adjustable stop 35 on the frame 8, when contacted by a stop 34 on the lower part 13 of the bar during further upward movement, causes the lower part to swing anticlockwise about a pivot 12 against the action of a tension spring 14 and cause the residual liquid and impurities in the ladle to pour past the shoot into the crucible. The feeler is adjustable on the bracket 23 and serves to stop the drive motor 17. The lifting operation may be triggered by the die casting machine and movement controlled by a time delay which sets the operation according to the level of the liquid in the crucible. A protective gas may be used to cover the liquid.
