Abstract
1375371 Uranium oxides UNITED KING- DON ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 20 July 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36730/71 Heading C1A A nuclear fuel manufacturing process resides in fabricating artefacts of spheroidal or other shapes by agglomerating UO 2 F 2 powder as starting material and converting these artefacts to a substantially fluoride-free oxide of uranium by heat treatment in an atmosphere of steam (which will produce a U 3 O 8 artefact), or of steam and hydrogen (which will produce a OU 2 artefact). A UO 2 F 2 powder (from the reaction of UF 6 with steam at 250 C. is agglomerated into spheroids up to 1500Ám. diameter and converted to VO 2 by heating at 700 C. in a furnace through which steam and hydrogen are passed. The UO 2 spheroids obtained can be coated with fission product retaining material to form a nuclear fuel.
