Abstract

1375238 Thermal regenerators T WEISSENBURG 27 April 1972 19547/72 Heading F4K In a thermal regenerator wherein a particulate heat transfer material is cycled through a chamber 2 in which it is heated by a hot gas (e.g. combustion gas) and a chamber 12 in which it gives up heat to a cold gas (e.g. air), the chambers 2 and 12 are separated by an intermediate chamber 6 in which a suitably adjusted pressure is maintained, said chamber being sealed from the chamber 2 by accumulations of particles at the upper end of tubular ducts 10 by means of which the particles are conveyed from the chamber 2 to the chamber 12. The accumulated particles comprise so-called fall cones of particles which are formed respectively between the upper end of ducts 10 and ports 5 in the base of chamber 2, and at the lower end of ducts 14 conveying the cooled particles from chamber 12. The cooled particles fall on to plates 16 adjustable in distance from the lower end of ducts 14 and continuously swept by a motor driven rotary scraper 17 into a chamber 15 from which they are recycled via means 38, 39, 40, and a chamber 21 to the chamber 2. Chamber 21 is constructed to provide a fall-cone accumulation 41 of particles and this, together with the maintenance (using fans 43, 45) of a slightly reduced pressure in chamber 21 as compared with chamber 2, prevents cold air from being drawn into chamber 2. Adjustment of the pressure in the intermediate chamber 6 can it is said be effected by providing adjustable throttle means in conduits 44 and 47, and by connecting the chamber 6 to the suction side of a fan 48.
