Abstract
1375057 Ink-receptive films PRINCETON CHEMICAL RESEARCH Inc 29 Aug 1972 [30 Aug 1971] 39959/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A process for preparing opaque, paper-like material comprising a sheet of a composition comprising (a) 20 to 97 weight per cent of a butene-1 polymer having a molecular weight in excess of 20,000, an isotacticity of at least 25 per cent and a butene-1 content of at least 50 weight per cent and (b) 3 to 80 weight per cent of filler particles distributed in the polymer, the surface of the sheet containing micropores and exposed filler particles, comprises extruding the composition to form a sheet and stretching the sheet to at least 5 per cent beyond its yield strain at temperatures of less than 60‹ C. The stretching may be effected by stretch rolls, by tentering frames or by gas pressure, directly after fabrication or after aging, and may be monoaxial or biaxial, to give a maximum tensile strength ratio in mutually perpendicular directions of 10 : 1 to 3 : 1. The filler may be a metal, metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, silicate or sulphate, clay, asbestos, wollastonite, silica, carbon black, sodium aluminium fluoride, microspheroidal or fibrous glass, graphite, lithopone, polyolefin, acrylic polymer, cellulose, cellulose ester, butadiene/styrene rubber, nitrile polymer, ABS terpolymer, wood flour, cotton linters, polyamide, polyether or polyurethane. In examples sheets are prepared by extruding and drawing compositions of polybutene with (1,3,4 and 7) calcium carbonate, polystyrene and stearic acid together with (2) yellow pigment; (5) wollastonite, polystyrene and stearic acid; (6) silica, polystyrene and stearic acid; (8) calcium carbonate and stearic acid; (9) calcium carbonate and polyethylene; (10) calcium carbonate and polyvinyl chloride; (11 and 12) polyvinyl chloride; (13) polymethacrylonitrile and ethylene/propylene copolymer; (14) talc, polystyrene and stearic acid; and (15) polypropylene and calcium carbonate.
