Abstract

1373750 Borided cemented carbides CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 26 Feb 1973 [9 March 1972] 9440/73 Headings C7D and C7F A surface hardened cemented carbide article containing 20-80% volume of at least one of Cr3C2, WC, Mo2C, TiC, ZrC, HfC, NbC, TaC or VC and a metal binder containing at least 50 wt per cent Fe, Co or Ni has a surface layer comprising carbide grains dispersed in a borided metal matrix containing Fe, Co or Ni boride. The preferred metal binders are in wt per cent (a) 1-6Cr, 0À3-6Mo, 0À3-0À8C, balance Fe; (b) 6-12Cr, 0À5-5Mo, 0À6-1À2C, up to 5W, up to 2V, up to 3Ni, up to 5Co, balance Fe; (c) 10-30Ni, 0À2-9Ti, up to 5A1, Ti + Al 9max., up to 25Co, up to 10Mo, balance at least 50Fe; with 10-22Ni and Al + Ti #1À5, at least 2Co and 2Mo, and with 18-30Ni and #2Mo, the Al + Ti# 1À5. Other alloy binders are also specified. The cemented carbide article is formed conventionally by liquid phase vacuum sintering after annealing e.g. at 900 C and machining to size, the article is borided in a pack cementation process comprising heating for 10-35 hours at 1350-1700‹F in a pack containing 1-50%B, up to 2% halide such as K1, NaF, NH 4 F, NH 4 Cl, NH 4 F.HF, and an inert diluent such as -325mesh Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , CaO, SrO, BaO, MgO. The B powder is preferably 5microns. The borided layer may be up to 0À007" thick and the borided article may be hardened by heat treatment. Alternatively it may be left in the annealed state.
