Abstract
1369142 Electrostatic precipitators; cyclone separators S MASUDA 7 March 1972 [26 March 1971 12 June 1971] 10644/72 Headings B2J and B2P Apparatus for removing suspended particles from waste gases comprises a conventional dust collector in combination with a precipitator having a plurality of electrodes which are energised with alternating current to produce a non-uniform a.c. field of the travelling or stationary wave type. As shown, particles in a gas flow 10 are electrically charged by coronadischarge apparatus 11 prior to entering the vicinity of a plurality of electrodes 1 energised from an a.c. source 23 to produce a travelling a.c. field which acts as a barrier to the particles and transports them in the direction of the arrow 25. The electrodes 1 may be arranged in V-formation, and a precipitator may include two such groups (27), (28) Fig. 3 (not shown), associated with dust collecting channels (40, 41, 42), one group being energised to produce a stationary a.c. field and the other a travelling a.c. field. The electrode 1 may have an insulating coating. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8 the apparatus. comprises a field-barrier precipitator 27 in combination with a conventional electrostatic precipitator 60 and multicyclone 102. The apparatus may also include an electrostatic precipitator of the wet type, the slurry from which is dried in a tower heated by the incoming waste gases (Fig. 6, not shown). The conventional dust collectors may be of the bag filter type (Figs. 7 and 9, not shown), or of the acoustic type (Fig. 12, not shown). Cyclones, venturi scrubbers, and inertia type separators may also be used in combination with the field barrier precipitator so that, in each case, the dust collecting properties of one type of separator complement those of the other type to produce an efficient system.
