Abstract
1368126 Lining foundry moulds A AHLSTROM OSAKEYHTIO 24 Nov 1971 [24 Nov 1970] 54620/71 Heading B3F Foundry moulds 1 for large drying cylinders for use in the paper industry are provided with a lining 6 of sand containing a self-hardening binder, by locating a former 2 in a mould, pouring sand and binder into the annular cavity between the mould 1 and former 2, vibrating the former 2 and/or mould 1 to effect sand compaction and allowing the binder to set. As shown the former 2, which is frusto-conical and tapers towards its lower end, is provided with a spigot 8 which engages a bore 7 in the mould base. Cement-containing sand is poured around the former and compacted by vibrating devices 3. The annular cavity may be from 25 to 100 mm. in width and the taper of the former is 0À5 to 2 mm. per metre. This taper ensures that the drying cylinder is of constant cross section along its length by compensating for the increased degree of compaction of the sand towards the bottom of the mould due to hydrostatic melt pressure during casting.
