Abstract
1367925 Dehydrating hydrangillite BAYER AG 1 Dec 1971 [5 Dec 1970] 56225/71 Heading C1A An active aluminium oxide which has a disturbed crystalline structure of X-aluminium oxide, a specific surface area of from 250 to 400 m<2>./g. according to BET, a residual water content of from 2 to 10% and a water absorption capacity at 50% relative atmospheric humidity of more than 10% is prepared by heating aluminium hydroxide (hydrangillite) to a temperature of from 350 C. to 800 C. with a residence time of from 0À1 to 2 seconds in a zone of high turbulence in a stream of hot gas which enters the zone at a temperature of from 500 C. to 1200 C., the stream of hot gas having a rate of inflow into the zone of from 30 to 150 m/ second. The turbulent zone may be contained in a conical reactor in which hot gas is injected tangentially at the narrow end and passes along a spiral path through the reactor, a portion of the gas stream returning in the axial direction. The aluminium hydroxide (hydrangillite) may be dried in a fluidized bed prior to entering the turbulent zone or may be injected directly into the return gas flow in the reactor.
