Abstract

1367974 Gun-type oil burners TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 31 May 1972 25376/72 Heading F4T [Also in Division F1] A gun type oil burner comprises a blast tube 10 housing a fuel atomizing spray nozzle, supplied with fuel by an oil pump (20), Figs. 1, 3 (not shown), a squirrel cage type fan (16), 26, on a shaft 17 driven by a motor (18) for supplying air via a plenum chamber 14 to the tube 10, an air inlet chamber 34 coaxial with shaft 17 and having a circular lateral opening 43 leading to the fan, fan noise being suppressed by a substantially semicircular plate 42 covering approximately half of opening 43 thereby to divert fan sound waves into the half of chamber 34 adjacent the uncovered half of opening 43, and there being a lining of sound absorbing material 52 on the semi-cylindrical section of the inner wall of chamber 34 adjacent the uncovered half of opening 43. The lining 52 may be made of asbestos in the form of an initially flat layer having a corrugated layer on one side and a layer of aluminium foil on the other side, the foil-covered side being cemented to the internal surface of chamber 34. Air enters chamber 34 via apertures in the cylindrical wall thereof, the effective opening of which apertures is adjustable by means of a band 36 having slots 38 and a fastener 40.
