Abstract
1367108 Measuring thickness of paper MEASUREX CORP 17 Dec 1971 [14 Jan 1971] 58721/71 Heading G1N The thickness of a travelling paper web 18 is measured by interposing it between two parts of a magnetic circuit carried on respective rubber diaphragms 23, 23' movable towards and away from the paper by the application of gas-pressure and vacuum respectively. The magnetic circuit comprises a U-shaped ferrite core 71 carrying two windings 74, 75 connected in series with a capacitor in the feedback circuit of an oscillator Fig. 5 (not shown) to control its frequency. The legs of the core extend through the diaphragm 23 and through a ruby or sapphire shoe 76. Leg 72 is rigidly fixed in the shoe by epoxy glue and leg 73 is fixed by room-temperature-vulcanizing rubber to accommodate thermal expansion. A ferrite shoe 81, possibly of a single crystal, on diaphragm 23' completes the magnetic circuit. Stainless steel bearing rings 84, 84' and annular plates 86, 86' increase stability of the diaphragms. Electrostatic build-up is prevented by grounded plates 87, 88 or the diaphragms may be made of electrically conductive rubber. Each diaphragm has an annular or horse-shoe shaped corrugation 24 near its periphery which is clamped between a plastics ring 26 and a retaining ring 27. Piston valves 48, 49 are operable by a rotational solenoid 54 to connect the chamber 21 above the diaphragm 23 to the vacuum or pressure side of a vortex fan pump (36), Fig. 3 (not shown) for raising or lowering the diaphragm 23. The surrounding hood includes two other diaphragms 62, 63 and is purged with dry nitrogen led in at 15 and escaping through various leaks. To adjust the output of the pump, different apertures (66) in a pivoted disc (64) are selected to control the size of a leak (67). The apparatus, together with other apparatus responsive to basis weight and moisture content, is traversed across the paper on beams (11, 12), Fig. 1 (not shown). The moisture content measurement may be used to correct the thickness measurement to a standard moisture content.
