Abstract

1367152 Throttle control device C W MACMILLAN 28 Oct 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 50116/71 Heading F1B Fail safe throttle control mechanism includes means in a connecting link between a throttle pedal and the operating lever of the carburetter butterfly valve to sense failure of the mechanism to return to a decelerating position upon an attempt to decelerate, and to react to such failure by immediately returning the operating lever to an idle position. An accelerator pedal 10 pivoted at its lower end (not shown) actuates a push rod which carries a piston 11 having an annular groove 25. The piston runs in a cylinder 14 and is biased by a compression spring 21. A spigot 23 is connected by a hose 55' to the inlet manifold and a spigot 24 is connected to a cylinder 45. Movement of the piston towards the throttle pedal is limited by a cross pin 27 in the push rod. An extension 16 of the cylinder 14 is pivotally connected to a lever 30 to which is attached a tension spring 32 which tends to move the cylinder in a direction to close the throttle. A rod 34 is also pivoted to the extension 16 and carries a flat plate 37 which is held by a spring 38 against a partition 35' across the middle of a sleeve 35. A further rod 43 is pivotally connected at one end to the butterfly valve operating lever 33 and carries at its other end a flat plate 42 which is held by a spring 41 against the end wall 40 of the sleeve 35. A rod 44 pivotally connected to the lever 33 has a ball end 46 which runs in a hollow piston rod 47 attached to the piston 48 of the cylinder 45. Operation When the engine is idling, return spring 32 overcomes spring 21 and moves cylinder 14 towards the accelerator pedal. The piston 11 then blocks the orifices of the spigots 23 and 24. When the pedal 10 is pressed, spring 21 remains compressed and cylinder 14 moves forward and through the sleeve assembly 35-40, opens the butterfly valve. If, when the pedal is released, the butterfly valve lever does not return to the idle position, then spring 21 extends and moves piston 11 so that groove 25 connects hose 55' to hose 55, vacuum is applied to cylinder 45 and the butterfly valve operating lever is returned to the idle position. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the assembly of cylinder 14 is replaced by two valves in series between the hoses 55 and 55', one valve being actuated by the push rod and the other being responsive to the position of plate pivotally mounted on, and moving with the accelerator pedal, the pressure of the driver's foot being transmitted through the plate. In a further modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the vacuum valves are solenoid operated.
