Abstract

1366911 Vehicle safety harness O L LINDBLAD 8 Sept 1971 [9 Sept 1970 25 Sept 1970 2 Nov 1970 30 Dec 1970 31 Dec 1970 10 Feb 1971] 41860/71 Heading A3V A vehicle includes a safety belt 1, 5 extending from a fixed attachment (not shown) to one side of the seat, through a displaceable coupling member 3 provided on the door of the vehicle to a wind-up roller 7 the member 3 being slidable along a guide 10 in the door when it is closed from the position shown to the end of the guide at the bottom rear corner of the door so as to bring the belt from a position in which entry to the vehicle is facilitated to one in which the belt is tightened around a passenger in the seat. The coupling member 3 may be driven by an electric motor 15 (Fig. 3) which drives a line 16 passing round pulleys 17, 19, 20, the motor being carried on springs 21 to allow it to rock to separate limit switches at the ends of travel of the member 3. At the limit of travel at the bottom rear corner of the door, the member 3 passes through a stirrup 13 (Fig. 4) on the door and engages with a fixed retaining member 12 secured to the vehicle chasis, so as to prevent the door being opened. A push rod 22 (Fig. 3) is provided to engage with a push button (not shown) on the coupling member 3 so as to release the member from the member 12 this push rod 22 being operated by a rod 26, associated with the door opening lever, acting through a two armed lever 24 pivoted on a shaft 25. The guide 10 is preferably a C-section channel member of plastics material and it may be arranged in a straight or curved path on the door. In alternative embodiments the member 3 is driven by a motor through a toothed belt on the motor is carried by the coupling member and drives a worm wheel engaging with a rack on the guide 10. Furthermore the motor may be dispensed with and the coupling member 3 urged to its forward position on the door by a spring or a weight housed in a tube disposed vertically in the door a handle being provided for sliding the coupling member back into engagement with the fixed retaining member 12. The wind-up roller may also be carried on the displaceable coupling member 3. In an embodiment for use in the rear seats of vehicles the guide is disposed so that the coupling member 3 is displaceable from a position adjacent the side of the rear seat to one in the roof of the vehicle. Electric circuiting is described for interconnecting the operation of the member 3 and its associated limit switches with the ignition system of the vehicle and pressure sensitive switches in the vehicle seats.
