Abstract

1364542 Heat pipes PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 6 Aug 1971 [11 Aug 1970] 37055/71 Heading F4U A heat pipe 1 has a vaporizing wall 3 and a condensing wall 4 and a chamber 5 for gaseous impurities which communicates with the space inside the heat pipe by an opening adjacent the wall 4, the inner wall of the heat pipe and the chamber being coated with a porous lining 6 of capillary structure. In the operation of the heat pipe the gaseous impurities are driven into the chamber and any working fluid which condenses in the chamber is returned to the heat pipe along the capillary lining. The chamber is substantially larger than the opening leading to it. In other forms the chamber consists of a tube mounted inside the heat pipe and either attached to the condensing wall or ending close to it, as in Fig. 6. In this form the vaporizing wall 3 is in the middle and condensing walls 4 are provided at each end. The capillary lining 6 covers inside and outside surfaces of the chamber 5 and joins that on the heat pipe wall in the middle of the pipe. Impurities collected in the chamber can be removed from the chamber via outlet 9 normally closed by member 10. The working fluid may be liquid sodium.
