Abstract
136,266. Candy, F. P. Dec. 12, 1918. Purifying liquids.-Apparatus for treating water with gas, such as chlorine, from a high-pressure source comprises a chamber, the admission of the gas to which is so controlled that the pressure therein is suitably above that of the flowing water at the point where the gas is supplied to the water. The gas is thus supplied proportionally. Chlorine under pressure, as from a cylinder, enters the chamber 1 through a pipe 2 and valve 4, which is opened by a wedge 7 supported from a float 5. The valve may alternatively have an upturned mouth, and a lever arrangement may replace the wedge. A pipe 8 connects the chamber to the water conduit, e.g. to the upstream end of a; Venturi pipe or its equivalent, and the float admits chlorine until the pressure of the gas within the chamber is equal to that of the water. The gas leaves through the pipe 9 which is connected to the throat of the Venturi pipe. The height of the chamber 1 relative to the water conduit is suitably selected having regard to the required gas pressure. When the pressure in the conduit at the point of admission of the gas is constant, the pipe 8 may be connected to any suitable constant-pressure liquid supply, a liquid such as brine or carbon tetrachiuride, from which the chlorine will not absorb moisture, being especially suitable. Such liquids may also be used in the chamber 1 when the water pressure is variable, a suitable air or other trap being then provided in the pipe 8; or a layer of paraffin oil may float on the water in the chamber 1, or contact of chlorine and water may be minimized by providing a division across the chamber, the float rod turning through a nicely-fitting orifice in the division. Fig. 8 shows apparatus in which the float is replaced by a flexible diaphragm 21, an adjustable spring 23 being provided to aid the pressure of the water. A vessel 25, Fig. 9, loaded with shot may be substituted for the spring, the rod 27 connecting the vessel with the diaphragm passing loosely through the top of the chamber 1, so that liquid pressure from the pipe 8 is applied to the upper side of the diaphragm.
