Abstract
1362295 Olefin polymerization catalysts SNAM PROGETTI SpA 3 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 51201/71 Heading C3P A catalyst consisting of (a) a compound of formula AlR 2 X where both R radicals are hydrogen or are C 1 -C 8 hydrocarbon radicals which may be the same or different and X is hydrogen, F, Cl, Br, I or a C 1 -C 8 hydrocarbon radical and (b) a compound YZ where Y and Z are selected from I, Cl, Br or F is suitable for polymerizing monomers in the liquid phase wherein the catalyst is maintained as a liquid. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of a solvent and may be terminated by the addition of ammoniacal methyl alcohol. In the examples isobutene and isoprene are copolymerized in methylene chloride, ethyl chloride or methyl chloride using as (a) AlEt 2 I, AlEt 2 Cl, AlEt 2 Br or AlEt 3 and as (b) I 2 , ICl, IBr, Br 2 or Cl 2 .
