1362273 Two-part couplings W DINSE 30 July 1971 [20 Aug 1970] 35883/71 Heading H2E In a plug and socket connector the plug is inserted axially into the socket to establish mating of the respective contacts, and when the plug is subsequently rotated relative to the socket to effect coupling the mated contacts move in unison with one another about the axis of rotation. The connector is shown as part of a supply line to an arc welding gun and the plug comprises an insulating housing with a shroud portion 20 and a body 21 which carries a hollow conductor 17 clamped between a conical screw 18 and a nut 19, a welding-gas or air line 14 and two electric control lines 15, a guide tube 13 which carries the welding wire extends through the hollow conductor 17. The tube 13 and lines 14, 15 terminate in respective connecting ends 13a, 14a, 15a. The socket comprises insulating housing sleeves 3, 4, 6, a body 8 and a resin insert 12 which carries further lengths of the tube 13 and lines 14, 15 having connecting ends 13b, 14b, 15b complementary to the ends 13a, 14a, 15a. The insert 12 is spring 33-loaded for linear and rotational movement within the body 8, rotational movement being prevented when in the linearly undisplaced position by a detent pin 31 in the body engaging a groove 31 in the insert. The socket is mounted on a fixing plate 5 between the sleeves 4, 6 while a supply line 10 for the welding current is connected to the line 17 by clamping between the body 8 and a nut 11. To couple, the plug is inserted linearly into the socket connecting the ends 13a, 14a, 15a to ends 13b, 14b, 15b until a retaining pin 22 in the plug enters a helical groove in the socket body 8 and is then rotated so that the pin 22 travels along the groove drawing the plug and socket further together and with the connected ends 13a, 13b &c. rotating the insert 12.
