Abstract

1361966 Wells &c CONTINENTAL OIL CO 7 Feb 1973 6049/73 Heading E1F [Also in Divisions Fl and F2] A method of reducing the fluid friction loss in pumping a liquid through a conduit includes dispersing in the liquid a friction-reducing agent at least a portion of which is in particulate form having a size of 5-300 U.S. standard sieve mesh. Thus the friction-reducing agent dissolves during the transmission of the liquid and the loss of friction-reducing properties which occurs due to shear forces when already dissolved additives pass through pumps is avoided. The method may be used in hydraulically fracturing an earth formation by pumping fluid, which may contain an inert substance such as sand, down a well, or for transporting solids such as coal or are suspended in a liquid. Examples of suitable additives for oil-based or aqueous liquids are given.
