Abstract

1361180 Thermoplastics closure UG CLOSURES & PLASTICS Ltd 22 Sept 1971 [22 June 1970] 30186/70 Heading B8T A bottle closure made of thermoplastics material consists of a top 2 and a skirt 4 which includes an upper part having a screw thread 6 and a lower part having segments 10 separated by slits 8 so that on application of the closure to a container 18, the segments may pass over the screw threads and rim 16 of the container so that the beads 14 may engage under rim 16, webs 12 being provided to integrally connect the segments. Score marks 22 and 24 form a line of weakness between the upper portion and the segments 10, and the webs 12 may be replaced by other formations, Fig. 4 (not shown). Cap applying.-The bottle closure is applied by means of a head having an upper cold portion 30 and a lower heated portion 32 movable under spring action radially inwards. The head provided with a pressure pad 36, causes the lower part of the closure skirt to be pre-heated during the time it picks up the closure and screws it on. After flexing over bead 16, segments 10 are urged radially inwards by head portion 32, and the bottle and closure are rotated relative to the head thereby causing webs 12 to contact and fuse to adjacent segments 10 under the heat of head portion 32.
