Abstract
1360659 Starting arc in arc welding apparatus BRITISH TITAN Ltd 13 Oct 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 57155/71 Heading H2H [Also in Division H5] An arc heating device comprises main electrodes 1, 2 and an intermediate electrode 3 insulated from the main electrodes by insulating rings 4, 5. Gas is introduced via inlet 7, 8, 11, 12. On starting the device an initial arc is struck between cathode 2 and the electrode 3. Gas, e.g. oxygen is then introduced into the chamber 1 and the arc is transferred for a high proportion of the time to the anode 1. When the current flow in the intermediate electrode has fallen to a low value, e.g. less than 200 m.a., a control circuit arranges to cut off the intermediate electrode when the current flow next falls to zero so stabilizing the arc between anode and cathode. Gas is then also introduced into chamber 6. Fig. 2 indicates a suitable control circuit comprising a trigger circuit 23 for energizing a thyristor 13, the trigger circuit having a stabilized D.C. power supply 24, and a mercury switch 2 and a leakage resistor 26. A current flow sensing device 18 is provided to activate thryistor cut-off and protection against excess current and voltage peaks in the thyristor is provided respectively by choke 17 and the circuit comprising resistors 20, 21 and capacitor 22. The mercury switch may be solenoid or manually operated in response to the current flow sensing device. The thysistor is mounted on a cooled block 14 using water containing a nucleating agent. The anode 1 may have a conical bore having a cone angle of 1-30 degrees and the arc may be rotated by a magnetic field (0À01-4À0 tacho.) from a coil around the cathode. The cathode may be a solid rod. A field may be provided around the conical bore to increase the gas enthalpy. Helical and/or tangential gas flow may be used and list of electrode materials is provided. The device may be used for welding, cutting, or producing high velocity gas flows or supplying heat to chemical reactions, e.g. oxidation of metal halides (including silicon) to metal oxides, formation of metal carbides by reactions between metal halide and a source of carbon usually in the vapour phase.
