Abstract

1359013 Extrusion compounding FRENCH OIL MILL MACHINERY CO 25 Aug 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 39986/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] A continuous process for impressing a compounding liquid into an elastomeric polymer which contains a volatile solvent comprises the steps of (a) continuously feeding the polymer through the chamber of a mechanical screw press causing an initial increase of pressure on the polymer and mechanically working the polymer, (b)heating the compounding liquid to a temperature above the vaporization temperature at atmospheric pressure of the solvent, (c) injecting the heated compounding liquid into the polymer as it is worked to heat it further, and (d) then relaxing the pressure, within a vented section of the press, to cause the solvent to vaporize. An apparatus as shown is a modification of the apparatus of Specification 1,289,499 and has an injection nozzle 112 for the hot compounding liquid, an adjustable choke ring 110, an expansion chamber 115 surrounded by spaced screen bars which allow the volatile solvent to escape. This is followed by an extruder section 120 which has a two-start screw 123, a die plate 125 and a rotating knife 126 driven by a separate motor (not depicted). An application is the compounding of solution polymerized SBR, containing hexane but not water, with hot oil,
