Abstract

1359001 Lap forming apparatus SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 19 April 1971 [29 April 1970 18 Sept 1970] 24235/71 Heading D1N A mat forming apparatus wherein thermoplastic material, e.g. glass, is extruded from a spinnerette 3 and attenuated by a gas to form fibres, comprises a sleeve 11 disposed below the attenuated device 9. The sleeve has generally planar side walls which converge in the direction of motion of the gas, the outlet cross sectional area of the sleeve being at least equal to the inlet cross sectional area. So that its slot-like outlet is transverse to the direction of movement of a moving receiving surface on which the fibres are formed into a mat. As described, the side walls of the sleeve are trapezoidal in shape and their lower longer edges are adjustable by screws 7 to vary the area of deposition of fibres on the receiving surface. A plurality of the spinneretes may be arranged over a single receiving surface. The sleeve can feed the fibres into a further fibre stream directing device which may be integral with, or separate from, the sleeve. A plurality of shaping devices may be arranged one above the other with air or steam being inducted or blown into the spaces between these devices. Movable deflectors may be arranged below the sleeves. Spray guns may be arranged downstream of the mat formation to ensure the fibres stick together.
