Abstract

1358919 Tandem axle suspensions DAIMLER-BENZ AG 16 Nov 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 53173/71 Heading B7D In a pneumatic suspension system for driven and trailing rear axles 11, 12 of a motor vehicle, the pressures in air springs 19, 20, 21, 22 for the driven axle 11 and air springs 23, 24 for the trailing axle 12 are relatively adjustable for varying the load distribution on the axles, and a lifting spring 31 is interposed between a support 33 on the trailing axle 12 and a transverse member 32 on the vehicle frame 10 to act in opposition to the springs 23, 24 for lifting the axle 12. The axles 11, 12 are connected to the frame 10 by spaced lower links 15, 17 and triangulated upper links 16, 18. The springs 19, 20, 21, 22 are interposed between beams 25, 26 on the driven axle 11 and supports 27 on the frame, and the springs 23, 24 are interposed between the trailing axle 12 and supports 30 on the frame. Respective levelling valves 36 arranged on each side of the vehicle and supplied with compressed air through a line 35 are connected to the springs 19, 20, 21, 22 through pressure-limiting valves 37 and to the springs 23, 24 through relief valves 40 so that when the levelling valves open the springs 19, 20, 21, 22 are first supplied until they reach a first pressure which then remains constant while the springs 23, 24 are supplied through the relief valves 40. Relief valves 38 opening at a higher pressure allow transfer of air from the springs 23, 24 to the springs 19, 20, 21, 22 if the trailing axle is overloaded, throttle valves 39 delaying transfer during transient suspension movements. One-way return flow valves 38a, 41 are incorporated in the relief valves 38, 40. The lifting spring 31 is inflated through a pressure-limiting valve 42 and a driver-actuated control valve 43 to lift the axle 12 when running under light load, a non-return valve 45 maintaining a minimum pressure in the lifting spring 31.
