Abstract
1358273 Extruding hose DUNLOP Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 4963/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A method of manufacturing hose comprises extruding an inner lining layer 2 of elastomeric material on to a mandrel 1, applying a reinforcement layer 3 to the inner lining layer 2, heating the assembly of the layers and mandrel to cause the inner lining layer 2 to expand and extrude through the reinforcement layer 3 in the form of nodules projecting from the reinforcement layer, smoothing the outer surface of the partly formed hose, extruding an outer covering layer 4 of elastomeric material and heating the hose so formed to completely cure the elastomeric material of the hose. The outer surface of the partly formed hose may be smoothed by removing or flattening the nodules. The latter may be removed by brushing with wire or leather brushes, scraping, grinding, scrubbing or cutting. The layer 2 and mandrel 1 may be frozen with liquid nitrogen to facilitate application of the reinforcement layer 3. The assembly of the layers 2, 3 and mandrel 1 may be heated to the curing temperature in a fluidized bed of glass particles so that the material of layer 2 is partially cured. The mandrel 1 may be nylon provided with a silicone mould release coating. The layers 2, 4 may be rubber and the layer 4 may be patterned. The layer 3 may be braided or helically wound wire or cord, e.g. steel. A temporary protection sheath 5 of non-vulcanizing rubber 5 may be extruded over the layer 4 prior to the final curing stage 1.
