Abstract
1357474 Polymerization catalyst systems FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 10 March 1972 [10 March 1971] 11328/72 Heading C3P An olefin polymerization catalyst comprises (a) an organometallic compound of an element of Group Ia, IIb or IIIb of the Periodic Table (Mendeleef) and (b) the reaction product of a tetravalent halogen-free titanium alcoholate, a magnesium alcoholate and an acid halide of an element of Groups IIIb to VIb of the Mendeleef Periodic Table and is used for the gas phase, solution or suspension homo- or copolymerization of olefins of the formula RCH = CH 2 where R is H or a C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbon radical at a temperature of 20‹ to 200‹ C. and at a pressure of up to 50 atmospheres gauge optionally in the presence of hydrogen. The titanium alcoholates include condensed alcoholates of titanium and aluminium or silicon. The magnesium alcoholate may have the formula Mg(OR) 2 where R is a C 1 -O 10 hydrocarbon radical or the OR groups may be partially replaced by halide, sulphate, carboxylate, hydroxyl, carbonate or phosphate groups. The magnesium alcoholate may also be used in admixture with other magnesium salts, e.g. Mg(OH) 2 , MgSO 4 or MgCO 3 . In the examples, ethylene and propylene are homo- and copolymerized using (a) aluminium triethyl and (b) the reaction product of T 1 (OisoC 3 H 7 ) 4 , Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 and SiCl 4 and ethylene is polymerized using (a) aluminium triethyl, aluminium diethyl hydride or aluminium diisobutyl hydride with (b) the reaction product of T 1 (OisoC 3 H 7 ) 4 , T 1 (OnC 3 H 7 ) n , T 1 (OisoC 4 H 9 ) or ethylene glycol titanate with Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 or Mg(OisoC 4 H 9 ) 2 and one of SiCl 4 , PCl 3 , POCl 3 , BCl 3 or HOClSO 2 . Silicon isopropylate or aluminium isopropylate or mixtures of these as well as HCI, H 2 SO 4 , CH 3 COOH or H 3 PO 4 are also present in certain examples in the preparation of (b)
