Abstract

1357328 Laminated panel COX & WRIGHT Ltd 8 June 1971 [8 June 1970] 27678/70 Heading B5N A decorative tile or panel is made by uniting a face layer of flexible sheet material 14, and intermediate layer 13 and a back layer 12 by a cut/weld press operation in which an upper platen 16 carrying a bevel edge cutting knife 17 is employed wherein the edges of the layers 12, 14 are welded by high frequency electrical heating and in the same stroke of the press the edges of the panel are trimmed. The face layer may be embossed during pressing or it may be flocked, printed or grained. The face layer may be formed of polymers or copolymers of vinyl halides, vinyl esters, or vinylidene halides; polyvinyl acetals; polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile; polymers and copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic monomers; polyamides; polyurethanes based on polyethers or polyesters; cellulose derivatives; polyethers; polyethylene; polypropylene; and polymers or copolymers of chloroprene, the films being oriented or unoriented and suitably plasticized if required. The face layer may also be of a textile material of woven, non-woven or knitted construction. The material of the base layer may be chosen from any of the materials employed for the face layer but need not be decorative. The intermediate layer 13 suitably consists of foam or cellular plastics material. In a preferred embodiment during the cut/weld operation the cutting knife 17 sinks into the material for a predetermined period of time without reaching the final cutting depth, the knife 17 remains at the same depth during a cooling period in which the high frequency heating is switched off and finally when the weld has hardened the cutting stroke is completed to trim the panel. Before welding two or more of the layers may be temporarily tacked together by means of an adhesive. The regions of the panel to be welded may have an adhesive coated on to them or applied as a separate film prior to welding in order to enable the welding to be effected. The panel may have a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive applied to the outer face of the back layer, said adhesive being protected by release paper.
